How to Make a Tassel with Yarn Quick and Easy
We always keep some white yarn in our craft bag, and it’s perfect for making a simple tassel. Today we’re going to teach you how to make a tassel in just a few steps. Of course you could buy premade tassels, but this is so much more fun.
Stick around to the end, and I’ll show you some super fun crafts that you can use that tassel for too. (We’ll use tassel and tassle interchangably in this post since both spellings are acceptable.)
I bet you’ve never heard of craft flashcards…Of course you haven’t…because I totally made it up 🙂 As a pediatric Occupational Therapist, I’ve witnessed kids struggle to complete multi-step activities. So, I came up with this brilliant (if I do say myself) way to break down crafts into bite-sized pieces in the form of flashcards.
These are especially perfect for those kiddos who have limited attention spans.
Crafts are such a great developmental tool for kids (improves motor planning, attention span, executive functioning, fine motor skills, language development and more), and using flashcards makes planning crafts for your kids to enjoy even easier.
Just print out a few of your favorites onto cardstock, cut them into the cards with a hole in the corner and place them on a keyring that you can connect to your craft supply bag (which you can fill using our master list of supplies that we stick to for every single one of the projects in the flashcard collection). It’s so simple.
And the best part is that there’s not a screen in sight. Technology is such a great thing, but it’s also nice to take a break from it once in awhile and let the brain explore in other ways. Click the image to learn more about our collection of 100 Craft Flashcards for Kids.

How to make a Tassel with Yarn
You can always buy premade tassels, but it’s so simple and fun to make these DIY tassels. You can even add wooden beads or other beads to the hanger. Use different colors and textures of yarn, twine, cord or thread to make your own tassels. This is such an easy way to make tassels that you’re going to want to make lots.
BASIC SUPPLIES FROM THE BAG
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Paper plate or cardboard
White yarn is a staple in our craft bag and is part of the master list of craft supplies that we use for every single creative project you see here at In the Bag Kids’ Crafts. By sticking to this list, your prep and clean up goes way down, which means more time for fun.
Step by Step Instructions:
Step 1
- The first step is to cut a piece of cardboard or a piece of paper plate about 4×5 inches. If you want longer tassels, increase the height of your cardboard cutout.
- You can also simply use the palm of your hand to wrap the yarn if it works for the length of the tassel. Small children’s hands will likely not be able to make a tassel.
- Choose what string or yarn you would like to use. We are making a simple yarn tassel here.
- Wrap yarn around the cardboard about 20 times or more if you want a fuller tassel.
*Make a mini tassel by simply using a smaller square and finer thread or embroidery floss.
Step 2
- Cut a piece of yarn about 2 feet long (longer if needed). This is the hanger for your tassel.
- Slide it under the wrapped yarn on one side.
Step 3
- The next step is to make a tight knot around the bundle of yarn. Make a double knot.
Step 4
- Now slide the yarn off of the cardboard square, keeping the tie at the top.
Step 5
- To form the head of the tassel, cut another piece of yarn a little longer then twice the length of the tassel.
- Tie yarn around the bundle of yarn, about 1 inch below the top.
Step 6
- Take your pair of scissors and snip the end of the loops at the bottom of the tassel.
- To finish off this part of the tassel, trim the end of the tassel to make it even on the bottom.
*You may need sharp scissors for this step. So, be sure to supervise children.
