How to make a Cute Elephant Craft

This cute elephant craft goes together quickly and is the perfect way to spend some quality time with your kids. For younger kids, you will want to precut the parts of your elephant, but this is the perfect craft for practicing fine motor skills by coloring, glueing and cutting the grass pieces.

SUPPLIES FROM THE BAG

  • Construction paper (gray, shades of green and color of choice for background)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Googly eyes
  • Markers
  • Elephant craft template

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Use the Free Printable Template

  • Grab your free elephant template and print it out. We chose to print ours directly onto gray construction paper.
  • Cut out all of the pieces for your

Step 2: Assemble the Elephant Body

  • Take your elephant cutouts and begin to assemble the pieces.
  • First add the elephant’s head to the body using your glue stick.
  • The add the elephant’s ears and the little tuft of hair on top of his head.
  • Last, fold down a small tab on your elephant’s truck, put glue on the tab and place the trunk in the center of the elephant’s head.

Step 3: Make the Face

  • Add some googly eyes to finish off your elephant’s face.

*If you don’t have googly eyes on hand, use these free printable eyes for your cool paper craft.

Step 4: Add Some Details

  • Now take your black marker or gray marker and add a few details to your art project.
  • To make the elephant’s cheeks (optional), cut circles from some pink cardstock and glue in place or use your pink marker to draw on some circles.

  • Use a marker or a pencil and curl the elephants ears.
  • Now do the same with the long trunk. We curled the top back and the end forward in a curved fashion.

Step 5: Place Your Elephant on the Page

  • Choose a color of construction paper for the background.
  • Then place your cute little fellow right in the center, about an inch from the bottom.
  • Secure him in place with your glue stick, leaving the curled ears unattached.

Step 6: Cut the Grass

  • Grab 2 shades of green paper. For one, cut it in half length-wise.
  • Then cut strips of paper about 1/2 inch wide.
  • For the next shade of green, cut the paper in half length-wise but keep one side wider than the other.
  • Now take the wider side and cut strips again.
  • You will be left with a stack of blades of grass that are 2 lengths in 2 different shades of green.

For kids just beginning to use scissors, you can draw some guide lines to help with the width of the grass. Though don’t expect them to stay on those lines. For little ones that aren’t yet ready to use scissors, tear paper strips.

Step 7: Hide Your Elephant in the Grass

  • Now it’s time to hide your cute elephanet in the grass.
  • Begin placing the blades of grass one at a time, only gluing at the bottom so that you can position the ears and trunk in front of the grass at least partially.

Using This for Education

This is a great craft when learning about African animals or just elephants. They are fascinating to study for kids of any age. Make these as a class and then create a unique bulletin board.
