SUPPLIES FROM THE BAG

To make crafting with your kids actually do-able and fun (like it should be), we always stick to a list of basic supplies that fit into one bag for all of the crafts that you see on this site. We never stray from the master list so that once you fill your bag, you’re ready to craft along over and over again, even when time and money is tight. Now let’s craft some memories!

Step-by-step Instructions:

Step 1: Use the Free Dinosaur Craft Printable

  • Download the dinosaur egg craft.
  • Choose from the two options and print it onto heavy cardstock.
  • Color the dino and egg using your crayons and/or markers.

Step 2: Cut Out the Dinosaur Egg

  • Cut out the dinosaur egg.
  • Then cut on the diagonal “crack” across the center.

Step 3: Cut Out the Baby Dinosaur

  • Now cut out your cute little baby dinosaur.

Step 4: Add the Paper Strip

  • Cut a strip of paper (about 1/2 wide) from the scraps.
  • Put a dot of glue on each side of the bottom of the egg around the middle.
  • Place the strip of paper on top and press down firmly so that the glue takes hold.
  • Trim away the excess from the strip of paper.

Step 5: Prep the Egg

  • Overlap the top and bottom of the egg.
  • Then use your hole punch to place a hole on one side of the center of the egg. Be sure to punch through both layers and to leave space around the hole so that the brad doesn’t break through.

Step 6: Finish Off the Dinosaur Egg

  • With the two pieces of the egg overlapping, place the brad through the holes.
  • Then separate it in the back to hold the pieces together.
  • Slide the dino into the egg, using the paper strip to hold it in place.

Now that you’ve made one baby dinosaur craft, why not make more? They’re so absolutely adorable. Then you can take them in and out of the eggs and create stories for them to act out too.

Tips for Improving Fine Motor Skills

I know that when coloring with little ones, there are all kinds of special crayons out there that you can buy, but don’t bother. Instead, just break your regular crayons in half. Trust me. I know that it’s nice to have beautiful new crayons, but they are better tools for promoting fine motor skills when broken.

Take it from an occupational therapist with years of experience. This makes it almost impossible for children to grasp the crayon with a fisted grasp and instead to use fingertips, moving toward a mature grasp for better writing when the time comes.

Gently encourage your child to use fingertips to hold the crayon, but then let them use their own creativity to color the picture, even going outside of the lines if they haven’t yet mastered staying inside the lines.
