This paper plate owl craft is not only fun and simple to make, but it’s also a great way to help kiddos practice fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as they lace the center. And I’ve never met a kid yet who didn’t love a lacing activity. There’s just something about it that’s so calming.

And if you like this owl craft, you’re also going to love making these popsicle stick owls, these paper bag owls and this snowy owl in a tree.

Fun Facts about Owls

  • Owls can rotate their necks 270 degrees.
  • A group of owls is called a parliament.
  • Owls will even hunt other owls, with the Great Horned owl being the top predator.
  • The tiniest owl in the world is the Elf Owl, measuring 5 to 6 inches tall.
  • Barn owls may eat up to 1000 mice each year.
  • Not all owls hoot. Barn Owls make hissing sounds, the Eastern Screech-Owl whinnies like a horse, and Saw-whet Owls sound like, well, an old whetstone sharpening a saw.

How to make a Paper Plate Owl Craft

Step 1: Cut Out Your Owl Craft

  • Fold a paper plate in half.
  • Using a pencil, draw a half curve at the very top and cut it out. This will be the owl’s horns.
  • Then draw a half circle just below center and cut it out. This will be the belly of your owl.

Step 2: Punch the Holes

  • Use the hole punch to punch holes all around the circle, keeping the holes close together.

Step 3: Complete the Lacing

  • Cut a length of white yarn about a yard long.
  • Keep the plate facing bottom up.
  • Lace it through one of the holes that you punched and secure it in place on back with a piece of tape.
  • Weave the yarn back and forth through holes, covering the cut out circle.
  • When you get to the end of the piece of yarn, tape it down in back and trim away any excess.
  • Repeat this process until all of the holes have been used at least once and the circle is sufficiently laced over (as pictured).

Step 4: Use the Owl Craft Template

  • Download the free owl craft template.
  • Print it out.
  • Use it to cut out all of the pieces for your owl craft from construction paper (colors of your choice).

*If you do not have access to a printer, cut out 2 large teardrop shapes for the wings, a beak, 2 large circles for around the eyes and 2 slightly smaller circles from white for the center of the eyes.

Now that you know how to make this owl craft, make it your own. Add different colors, cover it in polka dots, make rainbows on the wings…there are no limits or rules. You could even make this into Harry Potter’s famous owl, Hedwig. Just change up the colors.
