After all, you probably already know this, but crafting with your kids is about so much more than just making something. As they say, it’s about the journey, not the destination.
There are few things that match the power of crafts for improving fine motor skills. But fine motor skills aren’t the only fundamental skills that are improved when you make crafts with your kids. You’ll also find the it improves communication, problem solving, gross motor skills, attention span, motor planning, hand-eye coordination, visual perceptual skills, sensory processing and more!
Have You Tried Craft Flashcards?
Adding the use of craft flashcards when crafting with kids elevates the process even more. First of all, it breaks the steps down into bite-sized pieces so that kids don’t get overwhelmed. You can also use the cards as a sequencing activity…which step do you think comes next…choose a card. And I love that you can print out a few favorite crafts, punch some holes in the corner and connect it right to your craft bag with a ring. So simple!

This is not just my opinion. I’ve seen it over and over again during my time as a pediatric occupational therapist. Kids learn and develop best when they don’t even realize it’s happening but are just having fun through play, engaging all of the senses. This article from Scholastic talks about even more ways that crafts benefit kids of all ages.
Have you ever noticed that when kids have their hands busy, they’re much more likely to share and express their feelings too? Crafting together gives you not only the opportunity to work on the skills we already talked about, but also to nourish bonds with your kids that will last a lifetime. Sharing in the creative process can be very powerful, even if it’s just making a simple paper bag puppet.
Craft Supplies to Gather
As you follow the links to each individual craft, you will see a materials list for that specific project…but the good news is that every list comes from our master list of basic items that we use for every single craft on this site (and in our shop). We stick to this master list to reduce the amount of prep so that you can get right to the good stuff…making crafts with your kids!
