Dragon Craft Step-by-Step Tutorial:
Step 1: Grab the Free Template
- Download the pdf file and print the free printable dragon template. Printing onto heavy white cardstock is best.
- Start with the coloring page. Use crayons or markers to color the the egg. You can get as creative as you want with the dragon’s shell. We chose vibrant colors. A great way to promote fine motor skills even more is to break those crayons to encourage a mature grasp.
- Optional: You can also choose to use tissue paper pieces to decorate the dragon egg instead of just coloring.
- Then color your own dragon, choosing whatever colors you want for the dragon head and dragon’s body.
*If you don’t have cardstock, use the template to cut the egg and dragon from construction paper. Or turn this into one of our paper plate crafts by cutting the egg form from a paper plate, which is nice and sturdy and stands up to play better. You will need to draw in the details for your dragon.
Step 2: Cut Out the Parts
- Cut out the dragon egg, including the break in the egg.
- Then cut out your fierce dragon. We left a little space around the edge of the dragon when cutting it out.
*You will need to help young children with this step and the following steps.
Step 3: Make a Pocket
- From the scraps, cut a strip of paper about 1/2 inch wide and a little longer then the bottom of your egg.
- Use your glue stick to attach it on each end to the back of the bottom of your egg to create a “pocket” for your little dragon.
- Trim away the excess from the edges of the egg.
Step 4: Add the Hinge
- Grab the top of your egg and overlap it slightly on the bottom section of the egg. You will need enough room to punch a hole where they intersect.
- Punch the hole on the side of your egg, going through the top and bottom sections.
- Place a metal brad through the hole you created and bend back the prongs so that your egg is now hinged and can open and close.
Step 5: Assemble Your Fun Dragon Craft
- Slide your little baby dragon into the pocket that you created in step 3.
- Turn the dragon egg over to the front and open it to reveal your baby dragon inside.
- The dragon can now be take in and out of the egg as desired.
