Fun Facts About Stingrays

  • They move flapping their “wings”. Stingrays may look like they’re flying through the water, but a closer look will reveal a graceful flapping motion propelling them through.
  • Stingrays are purely carnivorous, preying on animals that live on or under the sand.
  • They are related to sharks. Both are a part of the same group of cartilaginous fish (meaning their skeletons are supported by cartilage instead of bones) and have similar skin.
  • Babies are born fully developed, called pups, can swim and feed immediately after being born, and most species require no parental care. They look like little raviolis.

Combine Reading with Creativity

The only thing better than making crafts is combining creating with reading a good book on the same topic. It’s a great way to also encourage a love of reading.

Step-by-step Instructions:

Step 1: Use the Free Stingray Craft Template

  • Download the printable stingray template.
  • Print it and use it to cut out the stingray shape from construction paper (color of your choice). You can also print directly onto your construction paper.

Step 2: Add Some Details

  • Use markers, crayons or paints to add details to your cut out stingray.

Step 3: Attach the Clothespin to Your Stingray

  • Grab your glue stick and generously apply a layer of glue to one side of a clothespin.
  • Place the clothespin directly in the center of the bottom of your stingray with the part that opens at the head of the stingray.
  • Press firmly so that the glue takes hold.

Step 4: Finish Assembly

  • Cut a strip of paper from your remaining construction paper that is about 1/2 inch wide and the length of your stingray’s wingspan.
  • Apply your glue stick to each end of the strip of paper.
  • Put it in place with the center placed over the clothespin (where it opens when squeezed) and the glued ends on the stingray’s wings.
  • Press the glued areas firmly so that it takes hold.

*You do not need to apply glue to the entire strip or to the center where it comes in contact with the clothespin.

Step 5: Make Your Stingray Fly

  • Slightly curl up the ends of the stingray’s wings by rolling them around a pencil or marker.
  • Once the glue has dried you can squeeze the clothespin to open it. Each time you squeeze the wings of your stingray the wings will flap so that it can beautifully glide through the ocean waters.

Stingrays travel in groups called fever. They’re very social. So, you’re going to want to make lots of these fun stingray crafts to create your very own “fever”.
