This baby sea turtle craft is beyond adorable. Start with the printable and color this little turtle any way you like, really make him unique. Then put him into his little egg until it’s time to hatch. What a fun way to learn about how sea turtles come into the world. Fun Facts about Sea Turtles

  • Sea turtles outlives the dinosaurs and have evolved from 110 million years ago with very little changes.
  • The temperature of the sand is what determines whether a baby sea turtle will be a boy or a girl.
  • You can tell the species of sea turtles apart by the color, shape and pattern of their shells. Their are unique “scute” patterns on the turtle shell and turtle’s head that even make it possible to tell individual turtles apart.
  • Only 1 in 1,000 sea turtles make it to adulthood.
  • It takes up to 30 years for sea turtles to become adults, and they can live between 50 and 70 years in the wild.

This craft is an excellent opportunity for learning and would be a great addition to your next ocean unit lessons or as part of a special ocean week. This could also be used as a sea turtle life cycle craft, as the egg breaks and opens and the turtles scurry to the water. How to make a Sea Turtle Craft

This craft tutorial is meant to be a starting place. The only limit is your imagination. Add any details that you would like to really make it your own sea turtle craft.


Kids craft ideas are no good if they only sit exist on the internet but are never actually made by kids. We want to make crafting with your kids something that you do regularly and enjoy together. So, we’re removing some of the roadblocks, like too much prep time, lots of mess and hefty pricetags.

Grab these items and fill your bag so that you’re ready to craft some memories at a moment’s notice whenever the opportunity strikes.

Step 1: Download the Printable Pattern and Color

  • Download the pdf file and print the baby sea turtle template. Printing onto heavy card stock is best.
  • Use crayons or markers to color the turtle (and the egg if you choose) or even get out the green paint. You can get as creative as you want with the turtle’s shell. A great way to promote fine motor skills even more is to break those crayons to encourage a mature grasp.
  • Optional: You can add tiny little googly eyes if you choose to your adorable craft.

*If you don’t have cardstock, use the template to cut the egg and turtle from construction paper. Or turn this into one of our paper plate crafts by cutting the egg form from a paper plate, which is nice and sturdy and stands up to play better.

Step 2: Cut Out the Turtle’s Egg

  • Cut out the turtle’s egg, including the break in the egg.

Step 3: Make a Pocket

  • From the scraps, cut a strip of paper about 1/2 inch wide and a little longer then the bottom of your egg.
  • Use your glue stick to attach it on each end to the back of the bottom of your egg to create a “pocket” for your little turtle.
  • Trim away the excess from the edges of the egg.

Step 4: Add the Hinge

  • Grab the top of your egg and overlap it slightly on the bottom section of the egg. You will need enough room to punch a hole where they intersect.
  • Punch the hole on the side of your egg, going through the top and bottom sections.
  • Place a metal brad through the hole you created and bend back the tongs so that your egg is now hinged and can open and close.

Step 5: Cut Out Your

  • Now cut out the baby turtle that you colored earlier.

*For little ones, an grown up may need to complete this step since the shape is more complex.

Step 6: Assemble Your Fun Sea Turtle Craft

  • Slide your little turtle into the pocket that you created in step 3.
  • Turn the turtle egg over to the front and open it to reveal your baby sea turtle inside.
  • The turtle can be take in and out of the egg as desired.

Bulletin Board Idea

I could totally see these adorable crafts being used as a themed bulletin board. Have your students make the turtles in different colors for some visual appeal. You could use the saying “Oh, the Places We’ll Go” or something about the excitement of new starts. It’s the perfect way to begin a new school year. Or include these in an ocean bulletin board theme.
