Adorable Yeti Craft for Kids (Fun Fine Motor Activity)

Share the love...

This adorable Yeti craft starts with a free printable. Now we could add construction paper or cotton balls to create the fur, but instead we’re going to get out the recycled newspaper. Torn into pieces, it’s a great way to create the look for your own yeti. What excellent winter fun, perfect for those cold days!

This craft is appropriate for most child’s abilities, even young children. Though for little ones, you will likely want to precut the parts of the yeti craft referred to in step 3.

If you enjoy making this Yeti craft, you’re also going to love making even more fun crafts for this snowy season. Try this sledding mobile, this paper bag polar bear craft or this snowman card (also made from recycled newspaper).

Fun Facts About Yeti

  • The yeti has been described as having white shaggy fur and a body like an ape.
  • This “creature” could also live in the Asian mountains near the Himalayan snow line.
  • Stories about the Yeti and another similar creature, Bigfoot, suggest that if they are real, they could be the same, or similar species.
  • The yeti can stand at least 6 – 10 foot tall, not as tall as the Bigfoot.
  • They are sometimes referred to as the abominable snowman.
  • A yeti was featured in the move Monsters, Inc.

Here’s a fun story about Yeti footprints from Kids News.

How to make your own Yeti craft

This yeti craft is perfect to create during the winter season, but you can really make it any time of the year. After all, they live in the mountains where there’s snow all year round. Though it is a great way to pass a cold day inside.

SUPPLIES FROM THE BAG

To make crafting with your kids actually do-able and fun (like it should be), we always stick to a list of basic supplies that fit into one bag for all of the crafts that you see on this site. We never stray from the master list so that once you fill your bag, you’re ready to craft along over and over again, even when time and money is tight. Now let’s craft some memories!

Step-by-step Instructions:

Step 1: Use the Free Yeti Template

  • Download and print both pages of the Yeti template onto cardstock.
  • Prepare some newspaper by tearing into strips and then into small pieces. Choose parts of the newspaper that is black and white print only.

Tear the newspaper into pieces is fun way for young children to practice those vital fine motor skills.

Step 2: Place the Torn Newspaper

  • Now that you’ve prepped some recycled newspaper pieces and have the template ready to go, use your glue stick to fill in a section of the Yeti.
  • Place pieces of torn newspaper on top of the glue.
  • Repeat this until the entire form of your Yeti template is completely covered, including each yeti’s arm.

Step 3: Prep the Yeti Parts

  • Now turn to the second page of your yeti template of this great activity. You can choose from already colored or simple shapes.
  • If you choose the outlines, color in the parts using markers or crayons prior to cutting out.
  • We chose to cut out the pre-colored and cut out all of the pieces for our yeti craft.

Step 4: Assemble Your Cute Yeti Craft

  • Now that the pieces are all ready, glue on the yeti’s hands, feet, horns and face.

You can also choose to just use the faces (we’ve provided a full page to use with a classroom full of students) and just draw on the hands, feet and horns.

Step 5 (Optional)

  • From the scraps of your template, cut out an oval and put in place for the Yeti’s tummy.
  • You can also grab a black Sharpie marker at this time and draw lines to define the arms and legs of your yeti.
  • Cut out around the outside of your Yeti to really bring it to life. You could even add a popsicle stick handle to turn it into a puppet. What a fun way to bring him to life!

Alternatives for using the Yeti template

I love the use of torn newspaper for this craft, but you can use other types of medium also. Some alternate things that you can use to create your Yeti craft include white pompoms, cotton balls, torn pieces of regular or construction paper, or tissue paper squares. Cover the body with these items and then add the cut out body pieces.

What If I Don’t Have Printer?

No printer…no problem! If you don’t have a printer, you can still make this fun activity. Start with a piece of light colored paper (light blue works great because it’s like the sky) and roughly draw the outline of the Yeti body with a pencil.

Then complete steps 1 and 2 as instructed. For the face, hands, feet and horns, just get out your markers and draw them in place. You can even get out the googly eyes. OR you can also use scraps of paper to cut out the pieces and glue them in place like we have done.

Turn it into a Letter Y Craft!

To make this into a letter Y craft, complete all the steps as written. Then finish it off by either using your sharpie marker to add a big Y to the Yeti’s tummy or cut a letter Y from construction paper and glue it in place.

What if I Don’t Have Newspaper?

Really you can grab any white paper or even gray paper for this craft activity. It can be construction paper, printer paper, cardstock or even tissue paper…whatever you have on hand.

Another option is to skip the paper all together. Instead, pull some cotton balls into fluffy fur. Or use pompoms and glue then all over the body of the Yeti.
