Patriotic Kite Kids’ Craft DIY
SUPPLIES FROM THE BAG
- 1 piece of white construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- White yarn
- 2 large popsicle sticks
- Glue stick
- Red, white and blue tissue squares
- Elmer’s glue
- Washi tape in red and blue designs
- Pencil
Step 1
- Glue together the 2 popsicle sticks into a cross
- Allow the glue to dry
Step 2
- Place the popsicle stick cross on top of the piece of construction paper
- Draw a dot approximately 1 inch from the end of each popsicle stick
- Connect the dots to form a kite shape
- You can use another pencil or popsicle stick as a straight edge when connecting the dots if you choose
Step 3
- Cut out the kite
- If your kiddo does not yet use scissors, you can help with this step by putting your hand over theirs to open and close the scissors and cut out the shape.
Step 4
- Cover the kite with tissue paper squares using the glue stick
- You can use the pattern pictured or make your own. We would love to see what you come up with!
- Trim off the excess tissue paper
Step 5
- Cut a piece of white yarn the length of your arm
- Make washi tape ties on the kite by folding the tape in half
- Trim the washi tape on the end, making a design
Step 6
- Glue (with Elmer’s) the end of the kite to the popsicle stick, at the bottom of the kite
- Allow the glue to dry
Step 7
- Cut a white piece of yarn approximately 6-8 inches long
- Tie each end to the kite as pictured
Step 8
- Glue the kite onto the cross using Elmer’s glue
- Allow the glue to dry thoroughly
There are so many great skills that are being worked on with this project! And your kids will be having so much fun creating that they won’t even realize they are also learning…sneaky 🙂 When they pick up the pieces of tissue paper, encourage your little ones to “pinch, pinch, pinch” in order to work on fine motor skills. Practice visual motor skills and getting ready to write letters and numbers by connecting the dots. Imitate the pattern here to practice visual perceptual skills. Work on using scissors by cutting a simple shape. And then there is the chance to practice crossing midline if you place the pieces of tissue paper opposite the hand that your kiddo is using. Then encourage him/her to reach across the body when picking up each piece. To learn more about crossing midline, check out THIS post.
So how will you be spending your Fourth of July weekend?
