Preschool Bee Craft Fine Motor Activity (Free Printable)

Buzz! Buzz! It’s time to make a fun bee craft with your preschooler. The main element of this craft is my absolute favorite supply…washi tape! If you don’t have any on hand, I’d strongly recommend grabbing some today. It comes in just about any pattern and color you can imagine, and it’s priced reasonably. However, if you don’t have washi tape, you can still make this preschool bee craft. Stick around to the end, and I’ll give you some alternatives.

If you enjoy making this bee craft, you’re going to love making these bug crafts too. Try this butterfly craft with newspaper details, this collection of popsicle stick bug crafts, or this bugs in the grass fingerprint craft.

Fun Facts About Bees

  • Bees can carry up to 122 times their own weight.
  • They can also communicate with each other through dance. A short fast “waggle” means that food is nearby and a slower one means that food is scarce and not close by.
  • Their brains are very sophisticated.
  • Bees flap their wings at a rate of 12,000 beats per minute.
  • Honeybees can be trained to detect illnesses in humans.

Here is a great article from The Bee Conservancy that discusses the importance of bees.

How to make a Simple Bee Craft

This bumblebee craft is perfect for kids of any age. For little ones, you may need to assist with some of the cutting, but be sure to only step in if absolutely necessary. It’s more important to relinquish creative control than for the craft to be perfect by adult standards.

SUPPLIES FROM THE BAG

  • Construction paper (yellow and white)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Washi tape (black and white patterns)
  • Bee craft template

To make crafting with your kids actually do-able and fun (like it should be), we always stick to a list of basic supplies that fit into one bag for all of the crafts that you see on this site. We never stray from the master list so that once you fill your bag, you’re ready to craft along over and over again, even when time and money is tight. Now let’s craft some memories!

Step-by-step Instructions:

Step 1: Use the Free Printable Bee Template

  • Download the free bee craft template.
  • Print it onto yellow construction paper (or heavy cardstock in the same color).
  • Then grab your black patterned washi tape and create the stripes on your bee.

Step 2: Cut Out the Bee’s Body

  • Now cut out the body of your bee and set it aside.

Step 3: Now the Stinger

  • Also cut out the stinger of your bee.

Step 4: Create the Bee’s Wings

  • Roughly cut out the 2 bee’s wings.
  • Place each on top of a piece of white construction paper and complete another rough cut.
  • Use a white patterned washi tape to cover each of the rough cut white pieces of paper, using small torn pieces of tape.

Step 5: Cut Out the Wings

  • Once each of the scraps of white paper are covered with white patterned washi tape, place a wing template on top.
  • Use each of the wing templates to cut out the wings so that you’re left with white, washi tape covered wings.

Step 6: Assemble Your Bee Craft

  • Glue each of the wings in place in the center of your bee.
  • Also glue the stinger in place as a final touch.

Now that you’ve finished your bee craft, make another! And even though we used yellow paper like a real bee would be, you can choose whatever colors you like best. Maybe your bee will be purple with rainbow stripes. It’s completely up to you.

What if I don’t have washi tape?

If you don’t have washi tape, you can still make this easy honey bee craft. To create the bee’s stripes, use strips of black construction paper, make lines with black fingerprints, tear thin strips of newspaper for the stripes or simply draw them on with a marker or crayons. For the wings, draw on a design or simply leave them plain white.
